Professor Chip Yardley - Yardley's Fine Finishes
The session lasted a full day. We were instructed
on how to
obtain the best finish for our cars, what products to use,
how to use them and what equipment worked best.
This seminar was without doubt the most comprehensive
technical presentation of its type any of us had attended.
It was especially appreciated from the standpoint that it
was not a vendor or salesperson selling his product.
I do not think there is any doubt that we will
do this again.
If you missed this one you missed a great one.
Special thanks to Bill Guarniere who allowed
the use of his shop.
Bill also went the extra mile and made us lunch.
BBQ and his own special beans.

John Sweney volunteers his Bentley for demonstration

Looks like a moment of silence in memory of the
Bentley.
Although I believe John Grubb just discovered the white
creamy stuff in his donut is really polishing compound.

Protecting the surface not being worked on and
masking pin striping, chrome and lamps.

Chip prepares John Sweney's Bentley for Sacrifice.

Ckip shows John where the blemishes are and how
he will use fine
sandpaper in the 1st stage of repair.

After 7 to 8 stages of polishing the finish is almost back to perfect.

The lights are needed to highlight the bad spots. And they do!

Almost there!

Finishing touches!

Out in the sunlight for the final test.

John Sweney also took notes and these are posted below.
GENERAL
Griots Garage offers good products all in one place, but expense is high.
Other good brands are Eagle One and Maguires. In all cases, less is more;
use less polish, less wax, less elbow grease for a better effect... this is
the hardest
thing to learn. Also, take time for everything; patience is critical.
To become more patient, it is important to be more comfortable: use cheap
play pads all
around your work area to kneel comfortably. Use bright lights to see well.
Get the garage air
conditioned! When working on car, use double-sided fleece (from fabric store)
and
put non-skid shelving pads (from Bed/Bath/Beyond) on top to hold tools, etc.
PAINTING & PLATING
Best paint for Houston climate is urethane basecoat/clearcoat. Use 3 coats
base and
2 or 3 coats clear (no more). Best paint is ICI from England. Next best is
Eikkens. All others
do not have enough of what it takes. NO duPont; NO PPG. Best painter is Tom
Malone at Malone Paint & Body. Westside Lexus tends to do good work. Assuming
you use good paint in a good booth, the difference between a good job and
bad one is
the prep and -- most important -- the person shooting. This explains why you
can get
different quality from the same shop. There are surprising few good shooters
in
Houston; lots more in rural Texas. Best plating is ALBA; be sure to specify
best level. Best pin striping is Jim Carnifax
PAINT TOUCH UP
For chips and scratches, use touch up paint from dealer because it is single
stage paint
to match your factory color. Dab using touch up dabbers from auto body shop.
CLEANING
Use mild lemon detergent in a bucket of water and a fake sheepskin mitt. Wash
in
shade and do one section at a time, rinsing well. Dry with Absorber brand
chamois
and microfiber towels. Clean wheels with soap and water or mild wheel cleaner;
take your time.
SANDING
Remove imperfections with 5000 grit wet sandpaper glued to foam backing. Clean
surface
with glass cleaner to remove residue. Sand in one direction or two, but not
in circular motion.
POLISHING
Use Porter Cable random orbit polisher (available from Empire Tool)
http://www.empiretools.com/index.html
with 15001 adapter and Maguires pads: w7006 for aggressive cutting,
w8006 for moderate polishing, w9006 for finish polishing.
Finally, use the 3M waffle pad #05729 for the final final.
These pads have the "hook and loop" surface that mates with the
No. 15001 adapter
WAXING
Best wax today by far is Eagle One Nano Wax; great shine, easy to use. Waxing
is
for cars that are driven. Show cars stop at polishing. Sequence for waxing
is a) work
in small amounts on pad at speed 3; b) Buff with micro fiber cloth sprayed
with Speed
Shine and place under pad at speed 1; c) Buff with dry microfiber cloth and
place under pad at speed 1.
Speed settings referred to are the Porter Cable Polisher Speed.
TOWELS
Microfiber towels... Use best grade from SAMs or Bed/Bath/Beyond, wash them
separately in mild detergent or woolite and use no fabric softener, fluff
dry on warm
setting, store them in sealed bags. Keep towels for different uses separate
(shine/polish/wax). Paper towels... Use VIVA brand. For special jobs use
Scott Pure Critical Task Towels #06151 by Kimberly Clark.
SPEED SHINE
Use Eagle 1 Speed Shine or other "gloss enhancer" with microfiber
towel.
GLASS
Eagle 1 20/20 Glass cleaner and blue shop paper towels. For nasty overspray,
use 0000 steel wool, never razor. For water spots, use vinegar and 0000 steel
wool
CHROME & STAINLESS
Uses hard-to-find compounds... Bad chrome is helped by Green Magic
(Kingwood TX 77325-5453) or Magic Mix from Production Car Care. Good polish
is
Mothers Chrome Polish or Chrome Glitz. Secret polish enhancer: use 91% alcohol
for extra brite shine.
TIRES
Avoid all Armor-All products. Clean tires first with Goo Gone Citrus to remove
"dead"
rubber, then finish with "Production 1000 Super Dressing" or Eagle
Tire Dressing.
http://www.nvo.com/prodcarcare/displayroom/category.nhtml?catuid=10139
RUBBER
Use Goo Gone Citrus to clean. Use Crystal Shine for smooth rubber. Maguires
#42
restores dull faded rubber. Also OK to use leather conditioner on rubber gaskets.
Use horsehair brush to get wax residue out of rubber.
LEATHER
Use Leatherique products per directions.
CANVAS TOP
Do not soap down or use cleaners; they will eventually bleach...
Brush with natural hair brush and air blow.
WOOD
Interior wood should be polished using "Crystal Shine by Car Brite"
INTERIOR PANELS
Interior matte panels can be cleaned with Speed Shine or similar.
Use natural hair brushes to clean; tape the metal so it doesn't accidentally
scratch.
CARPET
For homes, the Dirt Free system is best, but impractical for cars.
If possible, remove the carpets and power wash with water only to remove dirt
and grime.
